Ice adhesion behavior of heterogeneous bituminous surfaces

چکیده

The phenomenon of icing, and the derived processes for its mitigation, are great importance in many applications, ranging from transportation energy to food refrigeration. This has been studied mostly with respect manifestation on rigid, homogeneous surfaces, soft materials being topic more recent investigations. Although, icing often occurs substrates that chemically mechanically heterogeneous, e.g., widely used asphalt concrete, which consists rigid aggregates embedded bitumen, date, ice adhesion behavior such needs be better understood. Here, we study stresses—the stresses necessary remove ice—of blocks heterogeneous materials, juxtaposing two main constituents (modeled by Macor®) bitumen-Macor® composites. We show shear stress Macor® is almost twice as large whereas normal components composite a similar range. synthesize consist bitumen stripes find increasing width leads lower stress, while stripe direction applied force minor effect. Based our findings, then coat most ice-adhesive component (Macor®) thin superhydrophobic coating this can reduce substrates. also formed half Macor®, if first second (material order), measured less compared reverse case material order.

Comparative Evaluation of Ice Adhesion Behavior

In this study, the adhesion of ice to solid substrates with different surface properties is compared. Clear ice, similar to atmospheric in-flight icing encounters, is accreted on the different substrates under controlled conditions. The ice adhesion behavior is investigated by means of a dynamic vibration testing technique with an electromagnetic shaker initiating ice de-bonding in the interfac...

Room Temperature Characteristics of Polymer-Based Low Ice Adhesion Surfaces

Ice adhesion is mainly dictated by surface properties, and water wettability is frequently correlated with ice adhesion strength. However, these established correlations are limited to high ice adhesion and become invalid when the ice adhesion strength is low. Here we carried out an experimental study to explore the relationships between low ice adhesion strength and room temperature surface pr...

Dynamics of Ice Surfaces

The dynamics of faceted and partially faceted single crystal and polycrystalline ice are reviewed with an emphasis on the manner in which microscopic effects produce macroscopic shapes. Our understanding of the former is rooted in the basic kinetics common to all materials and our pursuit of the latter is largely motivated by the striking patterns exhibited in the natural environment when water...
